Artist Statement

I am a multimedia artist, grassroots activist, and social worker who explores the various ways in which people experience marginalization (e.g. racism, sexism, etc.) and exposes the violence inherent to those experiences, I hold both that transgenerational cultural disadvantage is cumulative and that individuals may have multiple, intersecting experiences of oppression. It is with rising concern that I look upon a world saturated with violence, that enjoys fewer arts- and culture-based practices that transform the conditions in which violence flourishes.

I do this work because I require the discipline of an art practice to help me process violence in my own life. Furthermore, I 'unpack' -isms already present in the public discourse as well as name, legitimize, and give expression to as yet unrecognized forms of marginalization. Although I have additional emotional and spiritual conditioning to do, I have tasked myself with employing different mediums (e.g. print, film, photography, etc.) to spotlight on what constitutes a veritable genocide of human capital. I believe our threshold for violence is now so high that much of it fails to shock us, or even register in our conscious minds. I seek to reverse this unfortunate trend on an individual and collective level.
